Current Corporation is pleased to announce the successful results of testing involving the simulation and detection of whale spouts with the Night Navigator 3.

The purpose of the testing was to prove that ships can detect whale spouts at great distances, night and day, through high-resolution thermal imaging. This allows ships to avoid collisions with marine mammals.

Two separate camera systems were used during testing; a Night Navigator 3 with a thermal optical dual field of view of 20° and 6.8° (25 micron pitch), and a Night Navigator 3 with a thermal optical dual field of view of 13.8° and 4.6° (17 micron pitch). Both systems also feature image-intensified night vision and high-definition day cameras.

To simulate the spout of a whale, an air compressor was customized to eject from 0.5-2 liters of mammal temperature (98°F) and ocean temperature (60°F) seawater and freshwater. When initiated, the simulator blew the contents approximately 3-6 meters into the air. The simulator was placed on a 13 meter test barge which was then sent to varying distances of 100, 250, 500, 1000, 1500 and 2000 meters. At each distance, night and day, the simulator made several blows. In each instance the spout could clearly be seen through the thermal imager.

The testing was overseen by Professor Joe Mobley, PhD, MA, Professor, of the University of Hawaii, a leading expert in whale research, who validated the results. “I’ve been presented with a lot of papers, proposals and products over the years and have never seen what was demonstrated to me in Vancouver by Current Corporation”.

The results were presented September 21-24, 2010 at a workshop in Monaco jointly presented by the International Whaling Commission (IWC) and the Agreement on the Conservation of Cetaceans in the Black Sea, the Mediterranean Sea and the Contiguous Atlantic Area (ACCOBAMS). Current Corporation President Douglas Houghton explains, “We have been working with Professor Mobley for the past three years on the verification of whale spout detection capabilities by Night Navigator systems and are pleased with the results of the testing. Whale spout detection is essential to the conservation of marine life and the protection of vessels at night”.

Current Corporation’s purpose is ’To Save Lives and Property at Sea’. Current Corporation is the manufacturer of the Night Navigator series of day and night vision camera systems installed worldwide on superyachts, workboats, high-speed craft, Coast Guard ships and fast patrol vessels. In addition, Night Navigators are deployed internationally for coastal surveillance. Incorporating High-Resolution Thermal Imaging, Gated Image-Intensified HD Night Vision, High-Definition Day Cameras and Laser-Gated Imaging, the Night Navigator series provides the best vision ever for all marine applications. Current Corporation continually invests in Night Navigator R&D for a diverse range of applications including whale and whale spout detection, extreme weather search and rescue, and oil spill detection.

Electrical infrared inspections can reveal more then just what the thermal imaging camera can see!

One of the simple oversights that some thermograhers will make, is that they will run the infrared camera over the switchgear, but not their own eyes!

The types of faults you might find during a visual inspection are simple things like discolouration around the cable termination points, or in the case of the infrared thermal photo below, cracked busbar insulation…

The above photo is the exact reason why your switchboards should at least have a visual inspection bi-annually, because ‘things’ can happen in short spaces of time when high voltage is involved.

During an infrared electrical inspection, all ’anomalies’ should be tested with an ammeter to verify loads… as some areas may look like a ‘fault’ due to a glowing red image on the camera screen… but it’s simply just load running through within the limits of the cable’s maximum load capacity. Abnormally high temperatures around termination points are always a good indicator if a potential loose connection is present.

At the end of the day, some commercial buildings will have 100′s of switchboards that need to be imaged… and infrared thermal imaging survey is by far the quickest way to get through them in minimal time and maximum results.

Are you looking for a simple way to spot the ‘hot spots’ on electrical switchboards? Electrical infrared imaging cameras are the fast way to thermal image hot and loose connections, from a safe distance and no contact required.

So which infrared thermal imaging companies in the USA are qualified and experienced thermographers?

Many infrared thermographers have completed level 1 thermographic training courses, which simply means they have general knowledge on qualitative electrical imaging training. They can image and interpret the heat pattern captured across the surface of the electrical equipment being imaged at the time of inspection. Resistance in electrical components are the most common causes of hot spots and failures in a power board, therefore the use of infrared cameras to detect these faults in advance is a logical choice of preventative maintenance.

Cheap thermal imaging cameras that are now on the market have a dark side… they also attract many novice electrical thermographers into the market. At the end of the day, it’s the consumer that loses.

Our company has thermal imaged electrical switchboards of all varieties, ranging from transformer switchgear, feeder panels, main air compressor panels on oil rigs, vent supply fan panels… and just about every other type of electrical switchboard you can think of!

Electrical thermographic survey inspections need to be carried out by a trained person with a trained eye… not just an electrician with a thermal imaging camera (Big difference). Thermal anomalies in switchboards and electrical systems can be very hard to see at times, even through the lens of an infrared camera… it only takes one loose connection to slip under the radar and potentially cause a fire. Don’t let your company be on the receiving end of a shutdown… that would be a very expensive exercise. Choosing a certified thermographer is critical in this case.

Why not call us today for a free quote. If you aren’t sure about calling, then why not take us up on a special offer! If we don’t detect any electrical faults on your job, you don’t pay a single penny (Minimum of 20 switchboards). If we do find a fault, then you get your monies worth. On top of that, we are still very competitive on price.

Call the team of electrical thermal imaging specialists today! We have the sharpest infrared eyes in the business.

It’s important to get a qualified electrical thermal imaging company to undertake your switchboard inspection.

One of the problems with ‘on-site’ electricians using a thermal imaging camera, is they will most likely find more issues then there actually are… creating further work for themselves. This can get very expensive for the company getting the thermographic survey, especially when the parts are high ticket items.

Always get an independent thermographic inspection!

There is a whole list of electrical thermal imaging companies on the internet, so the choice of thermographers in your local area could be confusing. We are certified to conduct thermographic surveys on electrical systems. The advantage of using an independent infrared inspection company like us, is that we don’t have a ‘vested interest’ in finding issues with your switchboards or control panels… saving you money.

The real advantage our thermal imaging cameras, is they can see what your maintanence guys and local electrician won’t see. An unexpected shutdown of your facility can get expensive… so why not detect potential electrical issues in advance!

Why not get a free quote right now over the phone based on the amount of electrical panels that need imaging. More about us here
